The National Library of Medicine — the same institution that runs PubMed — holds an item catalogued as “Thank you for pot smoking — American Cannabis Society [sticker],” dated circa 1978. It sits in Box 68 of the Tod Mikuriya Papers, the collection of the physician who wrote the first modern medical-cannabis casebooks.
That is not marketing copy. That is a US government archive quietly confirming that the pot smoking slogan on the shirt in the window has been in circulation since the Carter administration.
From Prez Bob to Prez Jeff
The Society was run by Bob Kundert — “Prez Bob” — through the years when saying thank you for pot smoking out loud could cost you a job. By the Society’s own account he spoke at dozens of shows through the 1980s, addressed crowds in Houston and Seattle, attended the first Cannabis Cups in Amsterdam, and worked alongside Jack Herer and the rest of the early legalisation names.
